... WHAT IS A HEALING SPA ???

When we talk about HEALING SPAS, we are considering the bathing establisments using mineral-medicinal waters with health qualities and medical proposes. The waters used in these buildings spring forth naturally hot and with a significant natural mineral concentration, recommended for various health treatments.

... and a SPA?

There is a great deal of confusion surrounding the term ‘SPA’, which sometimes makes it difficult to know exactly what we are talking about.

As Sánchez Lozano (2015) explains, although it is commonly believed that the term is an acronym for ‘salus per aquam’, the fact is that this phrase does not appear in Latin texts, meaning it would be a made-up acronym. However, this English-language term has appeared in English since the 16th century, referring to establishments with thermal or mineral water used for drinking and bathing (Encyclopaedia Britannica), as well as the place name of the town of Spa (Belgium), known since modern times (16th century) as a thermal town of international prestige.

Hence, whilst in English the term ‘Spa’ originally referred to bathing establishments with mineral-medicinal waters, the term used to designate such establishments varies from country to country, as do the place names (‘balneario’ or ‘baños’ in Spanish; ‘termas’ or ‘banhos’ in Portuguese; ‘Bad’ or ‘Baden’ in German;‘terme’, “Bagnères” or ‘Aix’ in France, amongst others), whilst the term SPA has come to refer to swimming pools or complexes of communal water facilities offered in hotels, sports centres, etc.
