There is a great deal of confusion surrounding the term \u2018SPA\u2019, which sometimes makes it difficult to know exactly what we are talking about.<\/p>\n

As S\u00e1nchez Lozano (2015) explains, although it is commonly believed that the term is an acronym for \u2018salus per aquam\u2019, the fact is that this phrase does not appear in Latin texts, meaning it would be a made-up acronym. However, this English-language term has appeared in English since the 16th century, referring to establishments with thermal or mineral water used for drinking and bathing (Encyclopaedia Britannica), as well as the place name of the town of Spa (Belgium), known since modern times (16th century) as a thermal town of international prestige.<\/p>\n

Hence, whilst in English the term \u2018Spa\u2019 originally referred to bathing establishments with mineral-medicinal waters, the term used to designate such establishments varies from country to country, as do the place names (\u2018balneario\u2019 or \u2018ba\u00f1os\u2019 in Spanish; \u2018termas\u2019 or \u2018banhos\u2019 in Portuguese; \u2018Bad\u2019 or \u2018Baden\u2019 in German;\u2018terme\u2019, \u201cBagn\u00e8res\u201d or \u2018Aix\u2019 in France, amongst others), whilst the term SPA has come to refer to swimming pools or complexes of communal water facilities offered in hotels, sports centres, etc.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
